Brumley (or Bromley as it was sometimes called) was an important stage stop along the line running from Leadville to Twin Lakes and then on to Aspen over Independence Pass. It was also a supply center for the mining camps in the area. The stop was named for the owner of a fine hotel here, known wide for its hospitality.

The best mine in the area was the Mount Champion. There was also the Eureka in nearby Mountain Boy Gulch.
